One Year Ago: Bethel AME Church Building Preparation

#OnThisDay (April 9, 2022): nine volunteers (including then GCNAACP President Daphne Gooding and Vice President Devin Barroga) gathered at the previous site of the Bethel AME Church building in Pleasant Valley to help former owner/custodian Sam Yoder clear out the structure in preparation for its disassembly and relocation.

On May 7, 2022, the Garrett County NAACP Branch welcomed direct descendants of the Bethel AME church congregation. A service took place in the structure, led by Reverend Meredith Hudson. Reverend Hudson provided a moving service.

On June 25, 2022, a special groundbreaking ceremony, sponsored by the Diversity & Engagement Employee Group of First United Bank & Trust, was held in Mountain Lake Park. Mountain Lake Park Mayor Don Sincell described it as “a truly historic event” on the grounds of the legendary Assembly Hall that is currently owned by the Apostolics of Oakland Church and is located along G Street just south of Maryland Highway.
