50th Anniversary Course! New! This course will explore the history of the African American in America from the first Africans who landed at Jamestown in 1619 through the current day.
Through lecture, videos, and class discussion the course will include the following topics: slavery and the slave experience, the cotton economy, the slavery issues leading to the Civil War, the roughly ten year period following the Civil War known as “Reconstruction” and how it affected African-Americans, the failure of Reconstruction and what that meant for the newly freed slaves, the African-American experience in post-Reconstruction America (1876 – 1955), the Civil Rights era of the 50s and 60s, and the African-American experience in modern day America.
This course is taught by Dick Carroll. Mr. Carroll holds a Master of Arts Degree (2004) in American History from George Mason University. Before earning his MS Degree, he served for over forty years with the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Reconnaissance Office in various capacities. He has been teaching courses on American History since 2005 at various colleges and is excited to be teaching in Garrett County once more.
